The Tawala language is spoken by some 10,000 people. They live in hamlets and small villages on the East Cape peninsula, along the shores of Milne Bay and on parts of the islands of Sideia and Basilaki. In all, there are about 40 major centres of population, each with its own dialect, but in the accidental course of colonisation a number of these centres have played a larger role than others.
